The Canopy Tour is awesome. They are adding more runs (3 last week) and it is a very well run operation. We bonded with our group and wanted to extend our time together so we had the tour drop us at the restaurant which sits on the same river that the Canopy tour goes over.

VIEW WHALE AND DOLPHIN WATCHING WITH A MARINE BIOLOGIST. DEC. 15- MAR. 31.MORNING TRIP
Encounter with the friendly giants.  One of the most impressive experiences in nature is to participate in whale watching. Of all the whales, the humpback is the most spectacular due to their breaching, lobtailing, flippering and their beautiful songs as part of their courtship rituals. On board, your captain will have a catalog of phototgraphs of many whales that they see over and over again throughout the years. It is very likely that they will be able to point out a few old friends. This trip offers you the opportunity to enjoy an unforgettable encounter with these friendly giants who arrive to the Banderas Bay to mate and give birth, year after year, during the winter months. Come, meet these magnificent creatures.

Your day begins with a dock-side briefing followed by a 40 minute ride to find the whales. You'll spend about 1.5 hours with the whales.
Included in this excursion is a light breakfast served on the pier prior to departure and soft drinks and baguette sandwiches for lunch while on-board.  This tour is not for the masses as the guides only take out a limited number of passengers.

If your cruise ship arrives at 8am, you will still be able to take this tour. Take the short taxi ride (about 10 minutes)to the starting point of the trip. Your guide will be waiting for you.

VIEW ATV COUNTRYSIDE TOUR IN PUERTO VALLARTA
No skill necessary to have fun on this tour! Safety instruction is the first item of business once you check in for this tour. Once you are comfortable in the "saddle", you will work your way out of town with your guide, moving onto the dirt roads that lead out of Puerto Vallarta. One of the greatest things about doing this activity in this city is the rough and interesting terrain that surround the area.

The road is bumpy, sort of like an uncontrollable roller coaster, but that is half the fun. You might hesitate as you reach the first river crossing, but no need to hold your breath as your machine will take you safely to the other side - no problema!

Each tour will have a special stop while traveling. If you take your trip from the city of Puerto Vallarta, you will have a short tour of the Tequila Factory, located in an old hacienda. If you start our tour from Nuevo Vallarta, your stop will be at a local restaurant where you can purchase refreshments.

Your guide will take you along some city streets, into small villages, and across some riverbeds. Wear your oldest shoes as it is likely that they will get wet as you head through some possibly knee-deep water!

Expect to get wet and a bit dirty on this ATV tour, which we think is half the fun
.

VIEW CITY TOUR OF PUERTO VALLARTA
See all the places that make Puerto Vallarta famous!  This tour begins on the north side of the city, showing you the newest tourist area of Marina Vallarta. You'll see it's homes, golf course and the yacht club and have a chance to snap a few photos. As you move closer into the city proper, you will feel the climate change to local color, both in architecture, businesses, and restaurants.

One of the areas you will visit is the suburb of El Pitillal. Here, just ten minutes from most of the hotels, is an area of Puerto Vallarta that has remained untouched by tourism. This bustling pueblo of about 80,000 feels much like the "real" Mexico. The main square is ringed with benches and shade trees; the small market and tiny tiendas sell everything at true Mexican prices and and you will see the landmark church of San Miguel. Here you will have some time to shop and enjoy a complimentary beverage.

On the way back to the bus, you will walk through a beautiful botanical garden, Cuale River Island and a suspension bridge. From this vantage point, you will be able to see Kimberly House in the distance, the house Richard Burton bought for Elizabeth Taylor.

As you travel the highway to the south, you will find the dense, lush jungles of the Sierra Madre Mountains. Along this highway, you will pass through a primarily residential area, sometimes referred to as Taxco by the Sea, but known as Conchas Chinas. This is one of Puerto Vallarta's most prestigious areas where some of the most beautiful homes along Mexico's Pacific coast are located. Here you have tremendous views of the Bay of Banderas, the mountains, and the town of Vallarta. Some people call Conchas Chinas "Vallarta's ultimate luxury escape."

On to the famous Mismaloya. It was nearby that you will find the set from
"Night of the Iguana", now weathered into ruins which allow you to imagine what went on here. You will also visit a tequilla factory for a tour and a sample. Last stop on the tour is a drive into the rain forest where you will have the opportunity to have lunch (at your expense) at a restaurant next to a river, surrounded by lush green vegetation.

VIEW HIKING THE RIO TRAIL
This delightful journey on foot will invigorate everyone, no matter how fast or slow you go. Oscar and Trisha realize that not everyone is at the same level of fitness so they try to customize your trip by breaking into small groups. This is wonderful as you can truly set your pace without feeling like you are holding someone up or, even worse, tripping over someone slower.

Your trek begins after a 5 minute ride to the base of the mountain and your walk will take you into the mountains and jungles of Vallarta. The trail conditions vary from packed dirt roads to small donkey paths and some river crossings.

Everything is so well spaced here for the perfect hike that you will have the opportunity to pass through villages along the river as well as ranches along the trail. The local ranchers and farmers will greet you and show you their produce, explaining how they grow their products. Your guide also knows all the local flowers and plants and will be subtle in his education.

Your reward at the end of the trail is a lovely waterfall. This stop will allow you to take a cool swim if you wish or just a rest while enjoying a light lunch of a sandwish, fruit, and soda.
Departures (Local Island Time):  09:00 AM (4 hrs)
Pricing:  Per Person: $41.00 USD (No children under 5)  Child: $26.00 USD (For ages 5 through 11 years)

VIEW HORSEBACK WATERFALL RIDE INTO VALLARTA JUNGLE
If you care about the horse you ride, then you have found the right place! When you arrive, you will be helped onto one of these beautiful quarterhorses. All of them have names that fit their character and charm, and these horses are charming! They all wear Mexican saddles which have a large saddlehorn, "large enough to rest your beer on" (just kidding - no drinking and driving!)

The trail begins by crossing over the Pitillal River at the foothills of jungle-covered mountains. As you wind your way behind your guide, you will catch a glimpse of a little corner of rural Puerto Vallarta often hidden from the view of the traveler. Some say it has been the same for the last 80 years. You will pass through villages, meet some of the people and see their rustic homes.

Your ride will continue upstream to a clear swimming hole and waterfall in the canyon, which will give you a moment's rest. But don't use all your film here, as you will continue to climb higher to a lookout spot on a mountain top. In total, you will be crossing the river four times!

Pamela has a very good friend who has also become a neighbor. Martina and her husband have built a lovely open-air restaurant overlooking the city and harbor and it affords you a perfect spot to enjoy a traditional Mexican lunch. Lunch includes quesadillas, chicken fajitas, cactus salad with a soda or beer but don't eat too much because you still have to get your horse back to his home.

REVIEW HORSEBACK WATERFALL RIDE INTO VALLARTA JUNGLE

PUERTO VALLARTA B. Washlow
My clients enjoyed a leisurely breakfast in the dining room as they watched the masses disembark the ship in Ocho Rios, Jamaica one morning. Once the mob scene had cleared, my clients then strolled down to the pier in and were greeted by their driver and guide to take them on the Wassi Butterfly and Pottery Tour. One of the clients had been to Jamaica many times before. He commented that he had never seen so much of Jamaica's countryside before. Their guide was extremely knowledgeable, well educated and pleasant. Her name is Beverly. The experience was one of a gentle paced excursion provided by friendly and genuinely helpful people. Thank you ShoreTrips for making me, the travel agent, look good by recommending your company.

VIEW AIR TOUR TO TALPA AND MASCOTA
Experience the customs and traditions of an authentic Mexican town.  Your adventure begins as you climb aboard your Cessna Caravan and take flight to the Sierra Madre mountain villages of Talpa and Mascota. You'll take in breathtaking scenery of canyons, tropical forests, waterfalls and green valleys as you make your way to your first stop, Mascota Jalisco. This town of 8,000 is filled with traditional Mexican architecture; haciendas, cobbled streets and a town plaza. You will marvel at the town church, completed in 1880, which took 100 years to construct. You will see the abundance of fruits and vegetables produced in this area of rich soil and semi-temperate climate. A delicious lunch, as well as a visit to the distillery to taste the local drink is also part of your tour.

From Mascota you will move on to Talpa, a town famous for its gothic church and religious celebrations in honor of Our Lady of the Rosary. Throughout the year, pilgrims come here to worship at the sacred shrine. The plaza is lively, with bands and mariachis playing and local vendors selling devotional items and souvenirs.

You will once more board your plane for the ride home, with stunning views of Puerto Vallarta's coast line.

VIEW KAYAKING...PADDLE AND SNORKEL JOURNEY
Paddle to the Marietas Islands for a not-your-average snorkel. Kayaking has become so popular for us and we think it's because it is a fun activity with minimal impact. Everyone can participate and the modern kayak is comfortable. No skill is required but your guides will give you a bit of instruction in the beginning to make certain you are comfortable.

Your tour will begin with a pickup at the cruise pier and then a beautiful 40 minute ride to Punta Mita, the site of some very new and very upscale resorts. The ride is a nice plus, as it familiarizes you with the area. Punta Mita is a natural setting that attracted these retreats and you are traveling there to find the same beauty. Upon arrival at Punta Mita, you will enjoy a continental breakfast served at a nice beach palapa restaurant.

After your tummy is full, you will board a boat for the 25 minute ride to the Marietas Islands, for an exploration of the undersea life at 2 different islands. You will observe the diversity of the underwater ecosystems and
rock formations for about 1 and a half hours before relaxing on the return trip back to Punta Mita for your kayak adventure. Your guides will instruct you in the use of your kayak and off you go for an hour of kayaking the sparkling blue water.
The unspoiled beaches are gorgeous and that is where you will launch your kayak. Once you find your rhythm, you will find this quite a relaxing experience. Your guide knows the names of every plant and bird so feel free to test his knowledge as you add to yours. This will prove to be an adventure as well as a sport expedition and your guide will accommodate your pace by reducing or increasing the paddle time.

You will be able to snorkel right off the beach in an area loaded with life. The coral reefs you will snorkel over offer views of manta rays and turtles. Again I suggest you refer to your guide to identify all you will see. You may be lucky enough to see a dolphin in the distance.

Your lunch is included and the location is a charming beachfront restaurant. You can select from hamburger, vegetarian plates, fish fillets, shrimp or cheese quesadillas, along with two drinks. This is a perfect tour for all ages, right down to the lunch selections!

VIEW MOUNTAIN BIKING THE RIO TRAIL
If only every place had a wonderful route like this to enjoy on two wheels!  This ride accommodates everyone, from beginners to advanced riders. It is a daily local ride that follows the River Cuale once you pass through the cobblestone streets at the rear of town. Before you begin, you can savor some hot coffee and croissants while you are fitted for your bike.

The river is beautiful and, although we were there during a dry season, it was flush with moving water. You will have the unique experience of riding over a suspension bridge before hitting the dirt trail.

Part of the pleasure of this ride comes from the wonderful area you are traveling through - the distraction of the small villages and ranches pass the time quickly. Your guide will stop along the way, showing you different crops inherent to this area.

Your fitness level will help to determine the length of your ride. These groups are kept small for your benefit and enjoyment, and also to help minimize impact on the environment. Both locals and tourists take this ride and the group breaks up into levels so all feel comfortable.

At the top, which is about 7 1/2 miles from your starting point, you will find yourself at a waterfall where you can refresh yourself. There is a swimming area at the base of the waterfall that you can enjoy, along with a snack and a drink. A shower is available for your use back at the cafe, where you will have some fresh fruit water.

Puerto Vallarta Weather

Puerto Vallarta sits on the Costa Dorada of Mexico, at the mid-point of Banderas Bay, where the Pacific Ocean washes the border between Jalisco and Nayarit. Located on the same latitude as the Hawaiian Islands (20 degrees north), its sub-tropical climate is often compared to Hawaii's.

Winter - (December 22 - March 21)
Spring - (March 22 - June 21)
Summer - (June 22- September 21)
Autumn - (September 22 - December 21)

Puerto Vallarta is surrounded by jungle, and receives considerable rain. The rainy season is June to September, rainiest in September. December and January, the peak tourist season, are hot and sunny. Spring and Autumn produces moderate temperatures. While the rain can spoil a day at the beach, the storms can be quite beautiful, with rain seeming to march across the hills and lightning illuminating the sky. Runoff from the rains can turn the seawater brown in some areas, detracting somewhat from the beauty of the beaches. Temperatures reach 90 degrees F (32 C) during the summer, and the humidity can add to the perception of heat. During the winter, temperatures are in the low to mid 80's F (28-30 C), quite comfortable for a stroll on the beach. Nighttime temperatures range from the 60's to the mid 70's (19-24 C).
