Have
fun while driving your ATV into Mexico's past and explore the land
and its secrets. We've watched these vehicles pop up all over the
Caribbean. There is no location more perfectly suited for them
than the Yucatan, with its jungles and its deserts. You, as
a solo driver or with your passenger, will receive simple
instructions before you head out safari-style into the wilds of
the Yucatan. Midway between Cancun and Playa del Carmen is a
perfect area for exploration. Your guide will be able to point out
the native flora found in the jungle that you will visit first.
You'll have to keep your eyes peeled for the native animals that
roam here, the spider monkeys, deer, and beautiful tropical birds
like parrots and toucans.
Then, put your foot to the pedal and hit the beach. A 'fast' run
along the water's edge ends with a refreshing swim before heading
back. Your tour isn't quite over, though, because this tour
operator figures you've worked up an appetite and he's ready with
some delicious Mexican snacks served with beer and soft drinks.
The finale is the best - a challenge of donkey polo - but you'll
have to book this tour to find out about that! |

Experience
history, culture and physical adventure all in one memorable
day. Your journey backwards in time will begin at your hotel.
Your tour will take you into an era that began 1500 years ago when
the Mayan culture began to grow around Coba ("Ruffled Waters") as
it was surrounded by five lakes. Of course, your guide will begin
the day by sharing his knowledge of the area's history as you
travel for 1 1/2 hours to these incredible ruins. Coba is an
archeological site hidden deep inside the rain forest on the
south-eastern side of the Yucatan.
It is easy to feel the power of the Mayans as you explore the
massive remains of the once-intimidating structures. The Nohoch
Mul temple and the Iglesia, a nine-tiered pyramid, are weathered
and covered with vegetation and yet they are imposing. You will
have time to climb up the pyramid and you will then be above tree
level, able to view the land surrounding this city and feel the
cool breezes.
From this spot, you will travel into an authentic Mayan village
called Chimuch. This small community consists of about 100 people
indigenous to this area and meeting and observing them will
fascinate you.
They will travel with you as you walk through the forest and they
will impart their everyday knowledge of their land. You will be
able to take an amazing zip-line across one of their beautiful
cenotes, or sink holes, then rappel 45 feet down to swim in the
magnificent cenote Balaam Kin. They will take you canoeing on
their lagoon and, as you are now ravenous, you will partake in a
generous lunch prepared by the local women. The menu includes an
authentic chicken cooked with rice, beans, potatoes, and hand-made
tortillas.
They will invite you into their homes in the jungle and you will
be amazed at how "modern" their lives are. You may not be able to
recollect all you have learned and experienced on this day, but
you will never forget it either. |

A
4x4 ride to unique snorkeling at the longest underground river
system in the world. This cavern trip begins first class when
you are picked up in a Mercedes Benz Unimog, an open safari-style
vehicle, to begin your 1 1/2 mile jungle crossing over the rocky
path that lasts about 45 minutes.
Once you arrive near the Nohoch Nah Chich, which means "Giant
House of the Birds", it will be a short hike to the area of this
cenote. You will have a few minutes to visit with the family,
whose property houses this special sink hole. Then you will begin
your snorkel tour with water-resistant flashlights and move slowly
through the longest underwater cave in the world.
It will take you about an hour to meander through this
unbelievable area of caves. This experience is usually available
only to scuba divers and so snorkelers revel in such an unusual
adventure.
You will arrive at Heaven's Gate (yes - it is really called that)
and emerge from the cave system just in time to collapse into a
hand-made hammock. As you gaze up at the clouds and contemplate
your underground conquest, you can think of the wonder of nature's
gifts to us.
Enjoy a feast of lunch with the Mayan community and, rejuvenated,
board your vehicle and move on to a second adventure.
Punta Soliman Bay offers a second high to the snorkeler and, as
you kayak out to the gorgeous reefs, you will be able to compare
the different life forms found in each ecosystem today. This
relaxing segment of your tour lasts about an hour.
Then, sadly, it's time to return to the real world. |

A
tour of the mystical ruins of Tulum, designed to fit most cruise
ship itineraries. You will be met at the cruise pier by
your guide with a first class air conditioned van for your drive
to Tulum. Upon arrival, you will see it...magnificently situated,
teetering on a craggy cliff overlooking the Caribbean. The walled
ruins of Tulum have become the meeting point between sun
worshippers and archeological enthusiasts. From the cliff-top
site, you can see the turquoise Caribbean. A path winds down to a
perfect beach, which allows you to dangle your toes. Thought to
have been settled around 1200 A.D., Tulum was an important trading
port and its fortress was still occupied when the Spaniards
arrived in 1518. An English-speaking guide will show you around
the ruins of this once-great Mayan city and you will then have a
chance to do some exploring and picture taking on your own. The
total time spent at Tulum is approximately 2-1/2 hours.
After exploring Tulum, you will visit a Lapiz factory where you
can admire the jewelry and also get a taste of the local tequilla.
You will have time for shopping as well before returning to the
cruise pier. |

Steer
an aqua-ray through the channels of Cancun to the fabulous coral
reefs for snorkeling. This is a really cool tour. Your aqua-ray is
like a jet-ski with an outboard motor and very easy to handle. You
and your passenger will join other lucky folks in a jet-ski safari
that will take you all through the lagoon side of Cancun, the
channels and the mangroves. As you follow the leader, you might
see some of the local inhabitants, as the sound of your motor no
longer frightens them away.
You will emerge into the sea and head for a famous coral reef.
It's time to stop now and enjoy the temperate waters as you
snorkel over the undulating coral. You will be well-equipped with
fins, mask, life vests, and snorkel tubes (you can keep your

Cenotes
are the entrances to undergroud rivers. For certified divers
only. The coastal area between Playa del Carmen and Tulum
has a thin limestone surface that allows rain water to filter
through the ground. Over the centuries, a system of underground
rivers has been created through which the water flows to the
Caribbean Sea. In fact, there are no above ground rivers in the
region, except the Hondo River which forms the border between
Mexico and Belize.
In some places, the roof above these waterways has weakened and
collapsed over time. These natural cavities or sinkholes are
called cenotes, from the Maya dzonot, and have been an important
source of fresh water since the days of the ancient Maya.
These cenotes are underwater cavern openings leading to the caves
and tunnels of the underground rivers. Cenotes are the doors to
this amazing aquatic system. The size and shape of cenotes vary
greatly, from simple holes in the ground to wells and small lakes.
Diving in a cenote is done
without losing sight of natural day light. Each diver has a
flashlight, so they can see the incredible formations in the
cavern. The diving depth is usually between 30 to 55 feet ( 9 to
17 meters), actually quite shallow so tank air time is extended.
Visibility can be amazing, over 150 feet (50 meters).
Be sure to take a dive trip to enjoy the wonderful experience of
diving in fresh water and stalactites and stalagmites silently
reveal the ancient geological history of the Yucatan. A basic open
water diver certification is sufficient, and no previous
experience in cavern diving is needed.
Because it is carried out in a partially closed environment, the
dive must be organized and supervised by a certified Full Cave
Diver who is also a Cavern Diving Instructor. For safety's sake,
there is one qualified guide for a group of maximum four divers.
This is a full day, two tank dive adventure... and comes with all
equipment. You will be served food and refreshments throughout the
day. This may be your most interesting day of SCUBA
diving ever!

Discover
this intriguing recreational and educational Eco-park. X-caret
park is perhaps the first of its kind anywhere. It is a theme
park, and yet the theme is ecology and archeology. You will be
able to climb the pyramids and explore over a dozen structures
that are scattered throughout the area.
Experience floating and snorkeling through the crystal clear water
of the underground river. At the start, you will receive a life
jacket and you will float for 20 to 30 minutes through this
underground cavern which begins at a sacred cenote.
You will discover the multitude of tropical fish at the caleta (a
small bay) where beginners will feel comfortable learning and
viewing the prolific life underwater.
An immense butterfly enclosure offers exhibits which explain the
life and varieties of the enormous amount of butterflies
indigenous to the area.
You may also visit:
The world of insects; a free flight aviary; a turtle pond; a bat
cave; beehives; a botanical garden; a coral reef aquarium; Jaguar
island; and an orchid farm. Get the idea?
Or just sit on the beautiful beach and soak up the sun.
Horseback riding, SCUBA, SNUBA and Swimming with the Dolphins are
extra-cost options.
You are free to stay as long as you like... our buses will return
you to the ship or hotel whenever you'd like.
Boasting more than 1,000 years
of history, XCARET includes eight groups of buildings which date
mainly from the Late Post-Classic period (1400-1517). In
pre-Hispanic times the area was the ancient Maya port of Pole, an
important commercial center. Pole was also
an important religious site. According to archaeologists, pilgrims
came from all over the Yucatan Peninsula to purify their bodies
and souls in the sacred waters of the cenote (natural sink hole)
and in ritual temascales (sweat baths), before journeying to
Cozumel to worship Ixchel, the goddess of fertility.
Today, the site draws fun-seekers who want to romp at Xcaret's
natural-history oriented theme park |

Dive
the best...the Yucatan Peninsula!! Playa del Carmen boasts
one of the most beautiful reefs in the world. It's crystal clear
water, warm water temperatures, myriad numbers and types of fish,
including stingrays and marine turtles, make these waters a
diver's delight. It's not uncommon to see green and spotten morays
as well as nurse sharks.
Because of the presence of ocean currents in the Cozumel channel,
each dive is done by the technique of drift diving, a unique
experience for those who've never done it. The most experienced
dive team in Playa del Carmen will guide you, with no more than 8
divers per boat.
