A wonderful day of
touring and shopping.
This charming area is
yours to explore with your small group and your English-speaking
guide. One of your stops will be at the beach at Anse Mitan, a stretch
of gorgeous white sand and, actually, the closest public beach to
Fort-de-France. Here the water is crystal clear if you choose to swim
and, if not, you will find plenty of shops around.
When you are ready, your guide will walk you over to Village Creole,
the site of many chic cafes and full of treasures you can take home
with you.
Your lunch will be at Pointe du Bout, a finger of land west of
Trois-Ilets which juts out into the bay. It is the indisputable
tourist capital of Martinique. It is loaded with fashionable French
boutiques, unbelievable yachts, and the scent of the French Riveria.
Another point of interest is the Eglise Notre-Dame-de-la-Delivrance,
the site of the marriage of Empress Josephine's parents and the
baptism of the future empress herself. There is also a Shell Museum,
where the landscapes are constructed of shells, and a sugar cane
museum. The Pagerie Museum, in town, was built on the site of
Josephine's birth. But, most important, the Village Creole, is the
location of the wonderful bustle of boutiques, cafes, and the "scene"
that goes with those activities. |

A tour of
Martinique's Caribbean Sea coast, including a bit of Gauguin, gardens,
and gushing lava. The modern history of Martinique starts up the
north. Along the costal road from Fort-de-France, the first town
you'll encounter is Schoelcher. You might recognize that name from
several historic sights named for Victor Schoelcher in the capital
city. It looks like and actually is a suburb of Fort-de-France. The
University of the French West Indies is located here.
As you travel north you'll find Case-Pilote, a small fishing village
and actually one of this island's oldest, where the church dates to
the 17th century. The next small fishing village called Bellefontaine,
has a public beach and is recognizable for the odd boat-shaped house
you will spot on top of the hill.
Le Carbet is supposed to be the site of Columbus' 1502 landing and a
marker on the pier notes that event. The church in this village was
built in 1645. This town has character, with thin streets and local
restaurants stretching along the beach. The Carbet Botanical Garden is
a stop for you, as its display featuring butterflies from around the
world is unique.
Just north of this town is the Musee Gauguin, featuring the famous
artist's letters and work and memorabilia of his five months in 1887
he spent with a friend in Anse Turin. This museum carries no
originals, but the flavor and feeling of the building alone carries
you back in time and is well-worth a stop.
Finally, you will head to Saint-Pierre, a legend which started as
"Little Paris of the Antilles" and later destroyed by the eruption of
the volcano in 1902. The Historical Musee Saint-Pierre houses
artifacts and photos of the town both pre- and post-eruption. The
larger Musee Franck A. Perret is dedicated to the study of the volcano
and ruins. |

Your knowledgeable
and friendly guide knows all the details of fascinating Fort de
France. This
interesting tour promises to take you to all of the highlights of
sophisticated Fort de France, Martinique's capital. Your walking tour
begins near the statue of Pierre Belain d'Esnambuc, who represents the
first French colonizer of the country. As you cross La Savanne Park,
you will get an education on the splendid tropical landscaping there.
Your guide, who speaks with that lovely French accent, will tell you
the stories behind the War Memorial, the Empress Josephine Statue, the
Schoelcher Library, the St. Louis Cathedral and more. The Saint Louis
Fort, one of the first monuments in the capital, is also part of your
route.
Not only are the tales enjoyable, but the buildings are so beautiful
you will think you are in the middle of a sophisticated European city
rather than an island. You'll also learn about tropical plants while
strolling through the park. You will savor your stop at a Martinican
juice shop for a drink. (Of course, I would be wandering into one of
those yummy French bakeries!) Your tour will end at the famous Roger
Albert duty free shop, a perfect stop to find French perfume at
dutyfree prices, located on Victor Hugo Street.
Look forward to the
Léontine Bucher's shop, reminiscent of the fifties with old postcards
to sell. At the end of this tour, your guide leaves you and you are
free to visit the intriguing shops. You then have the option of
remaining downtown and making your own way back to the ship by walking
back, by taxi, or by the bus that has brought you downtown if your
ship docked at the commercial harbor. |

MARTINIQUE
J. Nihart - 2/4/2003 |

We
had a wonderful cruise. The weather was perfect.
Martinique was our first stop and being this was
our first cruise (actually our first time out of
the US) we were a little overwhelmed when we
stepped off the pier into Martinique. The number
of taxi drivers all trying to get your attention
at once was overwhelming. At least we could tell
them that we already had a tour arranged. Our
guide was very patient and knowledgeable. She
was not offended if we had to ask her to say
something twice, in fact, she told us to ask if
we didn't understand something she said. The
walking tour was very nice and helped us
accustom ourselves to the island without anyone
bothering us. I believe that the price was very
reasonable. We took one other shore excursion
which was with the cruiseline, but if we do this
again, we will definitely consider more
excursions with ShoreTrips. |

Make
tracks to a beach that looks and feels like St. Tropez.
Let's discover a
nice and authentic touch of Martinique. Just imagine how happy you
could be riding along a sandy and lovely beach. Visualize yourself
romping in the surf and savoring drinks and a seafood lunch, right on
the beach. Picture in your mind passing through plantations raising
melons and bananas. Because your guide has arranged his tours to focus
on the island's environment, culture and cuisine, you will pass by
historical ruins, as well. You'll appreciate the petrified rock
savannah, a curious place, unique in all the Caribbean. Just follow
the guide on his way through Eden, smelling the spicy air of
Martinique.
This isn't just any old bike tour. It has been voted one of the top 25
nature experiences in the Caribbean by Travel Holiday Magazine!
Cyclists may want to keep in mind that the average temperature on the
island is about 78 degrees and reaches about 85 degrees from June to
November. |

Balata gardens,
volcanic ruins and stop at a local rum distillery show off Martinique!
Start your
tour with a drive through the residental area of Martinique's capitol,
Fort de France, to see the colonial mansions as well as the Sacred
Heart Basilica. Your next stop will be a visit to the lovely Le Jardin
de Balata (Balata Gardens), a man-made botanical garden located along
the Trace Road. Staying on this road, you will pass through
Martinique's lush rain forest.
Continuing on, you will stop at St. Pierre, the town that was
destroyed in 1902 by a volcanic eruption. Visit the ruins, including
the former theater.
A stop at the Neisson rum distillery, a small, family-run operation,
will give an idea of how these delicious spirits are produced.
Returning along the Coastal road, you will pass through Carbet, where,
according to tradition, Christopher Columbus landed in 1502. Drive
through the fishing village of Bellefontaine as well as the developing
towns of Casse-Pilote and Schoelcher |
