Totem
Bight provides the prettiest setting for totem poles that we have
seen. This trip will take you to the outskirts of Ketchikan, as
Totem Bight is a lovely 15 minutes from downtown. It was originally
the site of a traditional fishing camp and has proven to be a
peaceful spot on the edge of Tongass Narrows. The short walk through
the woods to the location of the totems provides both an aesthetic
and educational experience. Your guides will familiarize you with
the botanical examples of North Pacific coast greens which flourish
here.
The totems themselves are not as old as those found at Saxman Native
Village Totem Pole Park but the totems are beautiful, with excellent
interpretive signs, printed guides, and a small clan house on site.
Tastes of hot chocolate and smoked salmon will be offered before you
head back to town.
Your tour of Ketchikan itself will provide much of the background.
You will find interesting the current status of Ketchikan and its
future. You will drive past the Fish Hatchery and the Totem Heritage
Center and from June-September, will stop at the fish ladder. You
may choose to be dropped off on Creek Street, where you can explore
the shops on your own later and take the funicular up Cape Fox Hill.
Now that is something you can't do just anywhere. You will also
receive a ticket to Dolly's House Museum (a $4.00 value), once the
most famous brothel in town. Or if you prefer to skip Creek Street,
you will be returned to the cruise pier.

A
real adventure to a far-a-way island....by land and sea! This tour
proves to be a combination of sorts, as you begin at the harbor with
a tour by inflatable boat of the shoreline and its inhabitants.
While cruising along, you will have the opportunity to see whales,
sea lions, porpoises, seals, and a host of birds including our
famous bald eagle - that is, if they are cooperating. Regardless,
your guides will educate you on life along the shore, which is part
of the food chain in Alaska.
You will leave your inflatable raft on the beach and begin a
wonderful hike into the temperate coastal rainforest. Your guide has
been here so frequently that even the slightest change in the
scenery will catch his eye. He will be able to point out vegetation
and flowers that are unique to this area, and the purpose they have
served.
This is informative in a fun way and all ages can enjoy each facet
of this tour. |

Katch-me-if-you-kan.
Can't decide between a land and water adventure? This is for
you!First you will get settled into your jeep, either as a driver
or a passenger. You will be navigating the old logging roads in
the rain forest of the Tongass. The Tongass National Forest is a
forest of lots of islands, trees, and animals. It's a place where
eagles are commonplace and deers think they own the road.
You'll drive through dense forest and wooden trails. It is a
glimmering rain forest full of glaciers, spectacular scenery,
mountains, waterways, and thousands of islands separated by
straits and channels. But, it is the size of New Jersey, so don't
expect to see it all!
Your tour will lead you to an alpine lake, where a huge canoe will
be waiting to take you further. Exploring the surface of the water
and the shoreline will add another dimension to this, especially
as the canoe itself is an experience. these canoes hold up to 20
people, allowing 16 to handle the rowing around the lake.
Along with a short, easy hike, this tour is an exceptional way to
get to know Alaska. |

You
need to take the time to explore this charming city, but this will
help you get your bearings. These double-decker buses are
perfect for a city known as one of the rainiest places in Alaska.
Weather will determine if you wish to be on top or comfortably dry
below. Either way, you will have a great view and clear narration of
Ketchikan's colorful history as you pass through its charming
streets.
Much of Ketchikan is built on fill, on pilings over the water, or on
hillsides with steep winding ramps for streets. We felt it the most
charming of all the towns we saw in Alaska as it's success hasn't
overshadowed it's reality, a great fishing and logging town.
You’ll explore the famous Ketchikan waterfront including Creek
Street, the former historic Red Light district. Watch as salmon head
up the fish ladder and struggle through the current to spawn.
You will also visit the famed Saxman Village, which is crowded with
about two-dozen totem poles. They were moved here from there
original sites in the 30's and have been restored by native carvers.
Your guide will be able to give you great insight into the
background of the tribes and the ritual of carving. No trip to
Ketchikan can be complete without visiting the Saxman Totem Village.
This is Alaska’s only totem park with 29 authentic totems carved by
Tlingit and Haida natives.
This trip is fully escorted from the cruise ship pier.

You'll
tickle the treetops on this 30 minute flight. Alaska's
Inside Passage of Southeast Alaska is home to some of the most
breathtaking scenery on earth. One of its jewels is the majestic
Misty Fjords National Monument. Carved by glaciers long ago, snow
capped, sheer granite cliffs rise dramatically 3,500 out of the
sea, ribbonned with waterfalls plummeting sensationally thousands
of feet. Completely roadless and consisting of 2.2 million acres,
an area larger than Yellowstone makes a seaplane tour the only way
to comfortably experience the many different levels within the
deep, narrow fjords.
You will note, whether you arrive by land or cruise ship, that the
downtown of Ketchikan is drawfed in summer by the white wall of
the ships in port. This is not what you came to see in Alaska.
Rather, the wilderness is your goal. Your trip to the Misty Fjords
will take you away from crowds and will amaze you with its extreme
beauty as well as its close proximity to the urban life of
Ketchikan.
Upon arrival at our seaplane base, you will be greeted by your
pilot who will personally assist you aboard your aircraft. After
takeoff the flight will pass through Ketchikan airspace enroute to
the Misty Fjords.
The flight path will take you over the vast expanse of
Revillagegedo
Island and the Tongass National Forest. We cross the East Behm
canal into the Misty Fjords Monument on the mainland panhandle of
Alaska.
During the flight you'll have the opportunity to spot a variety of
wildlife in their natural environment. The highlight of this
excursion will be landing on a remote wilderness lake in the heart
of the monument. Although you land on the water, your pilot will
assist everyone to shore where you’ll have some time to breathe
the fresh air and take in the awe inspiring scenery.
The incredible 17 million acre Tongass National Forest and the
spectacular 2.2 million acre Misty Fjord National Monument - a
wilderness of untouched landscape will take your breath away.
You'll see massive rock formations and cliffs over 3,000 feet high
adorned with ribbons of cascading waterfalls pouring into many
beautiful lakes and saltwater fjords.
You will enjoy these luxury seaplanes, specially modified for
flightseeing, with picture window seating for every passenger. An
onboard audio entertainment system includes headsets that have
noise-cancelling to block out engine sounds and also feature voice
activated microphones for verbal communications with the pilot and
fellow passengers. Your pilot, rather than a recorded message,
will provide full narration on your trip.
I
promise you won't know which direction to look at first. Our heads
were darting back and forth as if we were watching a tennis match. |

The
Misty Fjord's ShoreTrip was
outstanding!! The price was worth it,
the pilot was great, and the plane was
super. We had no problems finding the

Thanks for your help. In the future we

The
ShoreTrip was great; it was definately
the highlight of our Alaska trip.
There were two things that made our
ShoreTrip special: We did not have to
see nature with 500+ of our closest
shipmates and the guides who lead the
excursions were terrific. David and
his son with Misty Fjords Float Planes
were outstanding!! I have given your
name to a few people who are planning
the same trip either this year or next
summer. Thanks again for great
recommendations. I plan on
recommending your service as much as
possible.

The
best way to see this 2.3-million acre piece of pristine wilderness
is by floatplane. This tour is longer than the cruise ship
tours.
The Misty Fjords National Monument has been carved to impressive
perfection by millions of years of glacial activity - on this
popular air tour, it will take you only the blink of an eye to
appreciate nature's handiwork.
The Misty Fjords National Monument offers everything that "means"
Alaska. The only way to take in the true majesty of this pristine
wilderness is by floatplane. It's soaring cliffs, saw-tooth ridges
blanketed in trademarks mists, sky-blue lakes, endless waterfalls,
icy saltwater fjords and miles of glacier-carved gorges cannot be
appreciated any other way.
And, while you take in the enormity of the Misty Fjords National
Monument from above, your pilot will be busy checking for wildlife
below, a closer look at creatures big and small, from burly brown
bears to agile mountain goats and from harbor seals to humpback
whales.

The
fly fishing is spectacular in the cold, fresh water lakes that
only a float plane can find. The best way to fish these lakes is
by using individual pontoon boats. They are 7 feet in length and
very easy to manuver.
We'll fly you up from Ketchikan to where the fish are biting. Our
float plane will get you into the wilderness within 20 minutes or
so... and we'll have you suited up in waders and on the water within
minutes. All necessary equipment will be provided but you are
welcome to bring any of your own rods or flies.
We'll also provide water and food.

Can
you imagine a canoe that seats 20 people? You won't have to if you
book this tour! Even the ride to Harriet Hunt Lake will be fun, as
you see this charmingly rustic town and its outskirts as you travel.
Of course, your guides will make certain you hear the true tales and
legends of colorful Ketchikan as you move along into the huge
national park to enjoy your canoe trip.
The canoe itself is an Indian-style canoe and holds up to 20 people,
with 16 of them paddling. As you paddle around the lake, you will
hear a different tune from your guide, one of native history and
nature. These two forces have combined in Alaska to forge the true
Alaskan legacy.
After your canoe ride, you will really get a sense of a camping
experience as you gather round and in the geodesic dome set up for
your comfort. Enjoy a snack of smoked salmon and clam chowder while
you listen to information about some of the carnivorous vegetation
growing around you.
Back to town to explore, on your own, the ins and outs of Creek
Street. |

Don't
worry, your wetsuit will keep you warm. You never thought
about snorkeling in Alaska? Neither did I, but people do it all the
time. There's a whole other world waiting to be seen in the waters
of Ketchikan.
Of course, with summer water temperatures from the 55 - 62 degrees,
you'll need a little extra protection from the cold, so after being
picked up at the pier, you will drive to the dive shop to be fitted
for your wetsuit. Then it's off to the snorkel area, a secluded
spot, where you'll enter the water from the shore. A mix of sand and
rock at the water's edge, it's a gradual slope into the water that
will be easy for you to navigate. The deepest you'll go is about 12'
deep.
With your mask in the water, you will be treated to the sight of
many types of invertebrates, including fish, starfish and hermit
crabs. You'll also see kelp grass and orange algae. If you're lucky,
you might even spot a dungeness crab. |

You've
dived the Caribbean, now do the North Pacific. This is a
dive for those hardy souls who like to experience the unusual. Your
shore dive site will be chosen depending on tide and and water
conditions. One popular site is Sunset Beach. If you are an advanced
diver, you might dive Mountain Point with it's 80 foot wall.
You will be outfitted with 6.5 mm two-piece wetsuits, 6.5 mm hood,
boots and gloves. Your dive will be from a gentle sandy slope to
more rocky terrain the equivalent of two flights of stairs. You must
have the physical ability to navigate the shore wearing from 60-90
pounds of gear. In addition to your suit, B.C.D. and tanks, be

The
coastline here lends itself superbly to kayaking, even if you have
never done it before. Pennock Paddling Adventure explores
the wilderness, wildlife and historic waterfront of Ketchikan by
kayak. Watch for leaping salmon, seals and whales as we paddle
through islands in the Tongass National Forest. We visit an active
bald eagle's nest and a salmon spawning stream.
Your departure on this tour will be immediately after receiving your
basic instructions for these user-friendly kayaks. Your object is to
island-hop, traveling in the protected waters around Pennock, Snow,
and Gravina Islands. There is a comfort level to this route as you
paddle along the shoreline, sometimes gliding under huge branches
stretching out over the water's edge.
You should keep your camera handy, as the salmon will leap out of
the water around the kayaks, tempting a hungry eagle. Salmon, you
soon learn, are the treasure of the summer, attracting the wildlife
and, therefore, your attention.
You will need no experience for this trip. The company has both
double and triple kayaks available so your children can enjoy this
tour as well. Center pods separate the paddlers on these fiberglass
kayaks so the travelers do not have to paddle in sync. Dry bags are
supplied to protect your valuables and raingear from any inclement
weather. Children will enjoy both the use of binoculars and
hydrophones to capture wildlife with both eyes and ears.
This is a very interactive trip. Surprisingly, jellyfish and
starfish populate the waters. The end of the tour will take you
along the historic waterfront of Ketchikan and, if the traffic will
bear, also up Creek Street. The guides will make that decision.

This
popular tour was designed for people looking for the wilderness,
but not too far away.
The first leg of your journey will be by boat,
about a 20-minute ride. You will then transfer to land and receive a
friendly greeting from your guides, who will give some basic
instructions. Once comfortable, you will set out in your kayaks. The
kayaks you are using have a center pod, which makes it unnecessary
for the two travelers to paddle in sync. You will find it easy and,
if you do this without a partner, the guides will find you one -
perhaps even one of the guides!
Before long, you will feel comfortable looking around you at the
wildlife, forgetting you are even in a kayak. Now you can observe
the wonders of Alaska, with looming mountains and rainforest growth
that comes right up to the shoreline.
The guides will know the action here, and will show you the Bald
Eagle nesting sites that are active. River otters, Black Tail Deer,
and even bear can often be observed during your kayak trip, most
likely mid to late summer. Sea lions, Orcas, and Humpback whales
often play a role in your stay on the water. The key to wildlife in
Alaska is to find the fish, the source of life for these creatures.
The upwelling of food in the water brings all sorts of critters.
The water is amazingly clear and you will be able to observe much of
the marine life at low tide. We saw starfish, even in the winter
months. The scenery is exceptional as well and dry bags are provided
to protect your camera or video recorder but please bring plenty of
film. The guides will be happy to record you as you are paddling
along the shoreline.
In addition, guides will be carrying binoculars to share with the
group as well as hydrophones so you can listen to marine life under
the water's surface.
Just before your return to Ketchikan, you will be
treated to a snack of smoked salmon and soft drinks. |
