A rugged hike to two of
Dominica's beautiful mountain lakes. This tour begins with a
drive through the Capital City Roseau to the Botanical Gardens. After
a short tour, you will continue up the Roseau Valley, breathtaking, to
the village of Laudat.
A hike for 45 minutes to an hour will get you ready to enjoy the
Freshwater Lake, one of the island’s two crater lakes within the
Morne Trois Piton National Park.
The hike is very scenic and offers great opportunities for
photography. On a clear day some of the highest and most beautiful
mountain ranges can be seen.
Freshwater Lake was formed many thousands of years ago in an old
volcanic crater and is located at an elevation of approximately 2500
feet above sea level. It's a stunning sight.
We next drive into the village of Laudat and walk for 15 minutes to
the Ti Tou Gorge, one of the most unique and fascinating places on the
island if not the Caribbean. The Ti Tou Gorge is like a crevice in a
mountain with a waterfall inside. You will swim up between the rocks
to the waterfall, an incredible journey!
After the gorge we walk back to the vehicle and return to the
cruiseship pier, tired but satisfied. |

You'll start in Roseau
and head to Morne Bruce for a panoramic view of the town and
surrounding area. The tour continues to the Botanic Gardens, with a
stop to see Dominica's parrots. As you drive through the garden's
exotic 40 acres, your guide will point out the various species of
tropical plants, including Dominica's national flower, the scarlet
blossoming bwa kwaib.
You will then travel to the Trois Piton National Park, home of the
Emerald Pool. A short, easy hike will take you to the Pool, which is
fed by a delicate cascade plunging off the edge of a fern-covered
cliff. If you wish, you may take a refreshing dip in the pool before
enjoying a delicious "fruit-in-season" drink.
After leaving the Emerald Pool, the tour heads north to the Carib
Territory, one of the most valued spots in Dominica. Here live the
mixed descendants of the last of the Island Caribs who inhabited the
Lesser Antilles. You will visit the church and the Cabet, the
traditional house of the Carib ancestors which was used for meetings
and social activities. You will also have the opportunity to purchase
crafts from the local vendors before heading back to your ship. |

Take a ROWBOAT up the Indian
River and then stop at an abandoned military post taken over by forest.
Your guide will start you with a drive along the West Coast to
Portsmouth, the island's second largest town. You will transfer there
to a rowboat for a trip up the famous Indian River. When early
European ships stopped at the island, crew members often rowed up
"the river of the Indians" to trade with the Caribs. Soon,
they were marking their maps "Indian River". A rowboat is
preferred over a powerboat as the noise of the motor will detract from
the peacefulness of the river and scare the wildlife.
The verdant vegetation along the banks of the river is dominated by
intricately buttressed Many trees. You are likely to see herons,
kingfishers, and sometimes, an occasional iguana.
The rowboats go to an area where the river narrows and visitors get
out and take a walk or go to the bush bar to regroup for the next
stop, Cabrits National Park. This is an 18th century complex abandoned
as a military post in 1854 and was taken over by forest. In 1982, some
partial restorations were carried out on Fort Shirley, the main fort
of the battery. Ruins of other batteries and the Commandant's House
are still standing and can be visited. |

You'll
enjoy the ride there almost as much as you'll enjoy the ATV's. It might be
difficult to decide which part of this tour is better - the lovely
ride uphill to the starting point of the ATV Tour, or the tour itself.
Best to count them both as one, as this will surely allow you to feel
you got to know Dominica through the terrain you will visit as well as
through your friendly guides.
The ATVs are new and easily operated by beginners as well as
experienced drivers. They all have 4-wheel drive and automatic
transmissions and you will be outfitted with safety gear, including
rain gear in inclement weather.
ATVs are becoming a very popular way to tour as they enable you to
travel into the lush areas of the rainforest while not disturbing the
natural environment. You will see panoramic views of the Caribbean and
Atlantic coasts and the lovely village of Bellevue-Chopin. The floor
underneath you will be padded with vegetation and animals and flowers
will peek at you as you pass. |

Here's your chance to swim in a
waterfall! Your expert guide will transport you on an inland
road to Trafalgar Falls. On your way, you will be lucky enough to pass
through the Botanical Gardens, a 40-acre garden located on the site of
a former sugarcane field. It thrives on about 85 inches of rain per
year and you will find it very lush. For the same reason, you will
appreciate your ride through the Roseau Valley.
When you arrive at Trafalgar Falls, you will have a short 15-minute
walk to the viewing area of these spectacular twin waterfalls. Under
the supervision of a guide, the more adventurous of you can climb over
the boulders to the base of one of the falls where there is a great
natural pool for swimming.
After this experience, you will hop back into your transport and head
in the direction of the west Caribbean coast. You are heading now to
the Emerald Pool, where another easy-access dipping pool is located.
You will also see one of the island's most beautiful waterfalls within
the rainforest Morne Trois Piton National Park. Again, you will
experience a short walk with explanations of the foliage and wildlife.
Time for a swim here as well before your return to your point of
departure. |

Our
trip was just great! We had a wonderful time and it was one
of the highlights of our cruise. Excellent value for the
money and much more cost effective (and enjoyable) than
booking through the cruiseline. We didn't have any problems
finding our guide as she was right there at the time
specified. And she was great, giving more than the typical
tourist patter. |

Visit beautiful Trafalgar Falls
and the Wotton Waven bubbling Sulphur Springs. How nice it is to
have the luxury of traveling with 8 to 10 people instead of 40 or 50
as you head out of Roseau Bayfront with a stop at Morne Bruce. Morne
Bruce is an ideal vantage point from which to get a panoramic photo of
the entire town of Roseau as well as the Botanical Gardens.
Instead of 15 minutes of boarding a huge bus, you'll hop back into a
minivan and continue down to the Gardens, which form the eastern
boundary of Roseau. The 40-acre spread has a collection of exotic
plants representing every part of the tropical world.
You'll head easterly from here, taking a winding mountain road to the
village of Trafalgar. The dense, tropical forests with their streams
and waterfalls are the main attractions of Dominica. As the motorable
road ends, you will find the short walk very easy as you head to the
viewing platform. You will be creating one of those memories as you
gazing at the twin waterfalls before you.
After you return to you transport, you find you are heading back down
the valley to the village of Wotton Waven. On your arrival, your guide
will take you for a fifteen-minute walk along a comfortable mountain
path through the rain forest to the Sulphur Springs. You'll see them
emanating from the ground in a spectacular bubbling motion spewing
volcanic hot water in the air 10 to 15 feet whenever they are active. |

A perfect combination of paddling
and viewing Dominica's rich undersea life. Ready for some
exercise? You will find yourself on a coastal beach in a charming
town. Kayaks will be ready to board. Facilities are right there for
whatever you need. In front of you is the scenic bay that you will
paddle across (it's not too far) to a small pebble beach. For awhile,
you will leave your kayak and snorkel over the beautiful reef
formations. You may be fortunate enough to see schools of fish,
including the Parrot fish, octopus, puffers, the colorful Trumpet
fish, and Sea Cucumbers. Be sure to keep your eyes open for the
occasional turtle or stingray. Your guide knows all about them and
will help you identify them while he explains Dominica's prolific
marine life. After plenty of time, hop back in your kayak and you will
all paddle back.

A dip in the waterfall pool is
your cool reward for taking this easy trek through the rainforest.
After a pier pickup and a drive through town, you'll head over to
Valley Road, cross the Roseau River Spring Bridge and head into the
beautiful Roseau valley. During the 20 minute mountainside drive,
you'll stop to view the breathtaking panorama of the valley and
southern mountain range. Shortly, you will be at the starting point of
your hike. The hike takes about 1 hour and is fairly easy, over a
grass covered mountain trail. With the beauty of the rain forest all
around, you'll reach the pool at the base of Middleham Falls. Jump in
and feel the refreshing splash of the falls as it washes over you.
After a delicious fruit punch, you will board your vehicle and head
back to town. You should have some time to explore Roseau before
heading back to your ship.

Just getting to this mountaintop
horse stable is half the adventure. The owners of this fine stable
will provide half of your Dominica experience by giving you
transportation to Morne Anglais, the location of the stable. The
island is beautiful beyond description, just overflowing with natural
attractions, and home to some of the friendliest people in the
Caribbean.
As you approach their property, watch carefully to see if David
whistles as he moves up the driveway. Be on the lookout, then, for the
horses, who come to greet you when they hear that familiar sound.
Your ride takes you through the tropical rainforest. Under the emerald
green canopy, nature comes alive!!...talking bamboo, whispering pines,
birds in song, exotic fruit trees, flowers, ferns, foliage and
spectacular panoramic views. Relax in your western-style saddle and
enjoy all that Dominica has to offer. |

This tour is like going to a spa
- first a natural pool and then a hot-water spa! Your expert
guide will transport you on an inland road to Trafalgar Falls. On your
way, you will be lucky enough to pass through the Botanical Gardens, a
40-acre garden located on the site of a former sugarcane field. It
thrives on about 85 inches of rain per year and you will find it very
lush. For the same reason, you will appreciate your ride through the
Roseau Valley.
You will enjoy scenic stops along the way as you travel towards the
village of Laudat. A 15-minute walk upon arrival will get you ready
for the Titou Gorge, the outlet of Freshwater Lake. There is nothing
like this spot anywhere else on the island and, from our experience,
anywhere else in the Caribbean.
The name "Titou Gorge" means 'Little Throat Hole" in
Creole and it self-describes this place. You will have fun wading,
swimming, slipping and sliding up the 'throat' of a mountain to a
waterfall located inside the gorge. The gorge was formed thousands of
years ago and is flanked by the rock walls that provide an intricate
and breathtaking setting.
A little walk will take you back to your transport once again and you
are on to the second portion of your tour, the luscious Trafalgar
Falls. Another short stroll will bring you to the viewing spot to see
the best angle of these falls. If you are adventurous, you can join
your expert guide in scrambling over the boulders to the base of one
of the falls where you'll find another inviting pool for swimming.
When I think of these falls, my mind reverts to all the movies.
Enjoy your scenic ride back to the point of departure.
