Review The
Spell Family - Cozumel and Belize |
We
made our plans through Shoretrips for our shore
excursions while on our Carnival cruise so that we
could know what we were doing before we left. When
we got on board our ship, we found that we saved
about $20 pp on each tour, there were 9 of us on
the glass bottom boat, 2 of us on the dolphin swim
and 6 of us on the cave tubing tour, so this was a
tremendous savings. Our tour groups were smaller
than the ships and much more personalized. We felt
that we made a good choice going through Shore
Trips and will use you again if we have the
opportunity.
I'll admit that when I booked my trips with
ShoreTrips, I was skeptical and afraid that I
might be sorry. But I'm not and I'll be glad to
give my recommendation. All of the guides were
very nice and prompt at meeting us where and when
we were supposed to. All tours were on the same
time as the ship so we didn't have to worry about
anything. The guides made sure we were back on the
ship in plenty of time. This was our 7th
anniversary and my parent's 49th. So, Thanks to
Barry and everyone at ShoreTrips, we had a great
time! |

Tour
remote beaches, lush jungles, and two Mayan ruins while bumping
along in a jeep! There is no better way to travel over the back
roads of Cozumel than with a hardy vehicle like a jeep. Keep the
soft-top cover up or take it off, as you wish. Jeeps allow you into
areas often unseen by locals as well as tourists. Your morning will
begin with danish to fuel your day.
Hang onto your hat as you enjoy the bumps and grinds of the roads
while traveling through the island to view the tropical Caribbean
side. The lushness of the jungle will hold contrast to the remote
beaches as you roam along the water's edge.
Your tour includes a look at two coastal Mayan ruins that date back
to 1200 A.D. You will make a stop at a great beach for a rotisserie
chicken lunch and also have the opportunity to snorkel at the rare
reef Micro, about 200 yards off-shore, if the weather permits. There
your guide will lead you in and out of the giant coral heads that
reach from the sandy bottom sometimes up to the surface. The water
can be a bit rough, so you should be a fairly strong swimmer to
snorkel here. Snorkel gear will be provided for you. At the time of
purchasing this trip, you will asked for your shoe size to ensure
correct fin size.
For those who aren´t confident swimmers, you can take this time to
sunbathe or beachcomb along the white sand shore. |

Enjoy
this nice new option for a port you may have visited before.
A comfortable ride by van will transport you across the
island to the area called Columbia Lagoon. From here the
terrain gets bumpy, so you will board an open air transport
for your trek through this 247-acre preserve, located at the
southernmost tip of Cozumel. Your guide will point out the
numerous birds and animals that inhabit this large protected
area and will explain the typography which has a variety of
natural landscapes, a coastal beach, mangrove jungle, and a
large lagoon.
On your tour, we will take you to the lighthouse and the
museum. After allowing you adequate time in each, you will
be off to the beach for swimming and snorkeling. Relax and
enjoy. Even a box lunch will be provided so you have nothing
to worry about.
Just after you pack up your belongings, we will have you
board a pontoon boat so you can travel down the lagoon. You
will finish with an "alligator hunt" and a short
visit to a Maya ruin. |

You'll
be a happy caballero as you ride to visit a local hacienda.
This is not just your average horseback ride. Saddle up for
your trip through Cozumel's jungle paths en route to a
lovely Hacienda. Along the way, your English speaking guide
will point out the indigenous plant and animal life and
explain how Mexico's famous cenotes (water-filled limestone
sinkholes) were formed.
Upon arrival at the Hacienda, you will be treated to a
refreshing beverage and will have about 1/2 hour to swim or
relax at the pool. If you wish, additional soft drinks, beer
and mixed drinks are available for purchase at the pool bar.
If you wish to stay a little longer at the pool, that's
fine, just don't stay too long and miss your ship! You'll
saddle up again for the return ride to the starting point.
The staff at the Hacienda will call a taxi for your return
to the cruise pier or wherever you wish to go next.

Not
for the faint of heart. Bump and bounce your way to parts of
Cozumel most people never see!! Cozumel's finest eco-tour is
an adventure you'll treasure forever. This trip is taken in recycled
VW dune buggies that are made right here in Cozumel. Your tour
guides will prepare the dune buggies, pack your lunch, and will
bring plenty of refreshments and beer. You're the driver, as you
head off-road over the rocks, ruts and sand into areas that are not
often seen by tourists. With 3 or 4 people in your dune buggy, you
can each have a turn at the wheel. Your guide will show you two
coastal ruins, remote coastline, pristine reefs, and you'll have
frequent encounters with local wildlife. You will visit bird
habitats, see iguanas, lizards, and maybe even the local crocodile.
The ancient Mayan ruin of the Castillo Real is on your agenda, as
well as the Atoilles Reef. This reef is grown in a u-shape along the
shore creating a "bay" effect of calm waters. The reefs here are
shallow and abundant with sealife. This area holds a very different
reef system than that we are used to seeing on this (west) side of
the island. You may see baby turtles, and other young life. Please
be aware there is a 200 yard swim to the reef and you must be a
strong swimmer to snorkel here!
For those who aren´t confident swimmers, there is time for fun and
frolicking along the white sand shore. The shore water is shallow
and there are a few fish and shells to see if you choose to snorkel
here.
Your stop for lunch is a Mexican delight - chicken tacos, rice,
tortillas, soda and beer.
This tour has been highly recommended by all who have had the good
fortune to try it! Here's a fair warning - this tour is truly a
party and beer will be served. |

See
Cozumel's marine life - either from inside the boat or outside,
snorkeling in warm waters. This three-hour boat ride will take you
to the most beautiful reef areas in the world to observe marine life
and colorful fish through its panoramic glass bottom. It is a
comfortable journey, whether you spend your time viewing the fish
from inside the boat or outside.
The island's clear water and the proximity of at least 20 live reefs
make snorkeling a treat here, even for the neophyte. The west side
of the island faces a calm sea which is ideal for everyone to
comfortably get their feet wet. No, this is not just another glass
bottom boat! What makes it different? First of all, it is cruising
in Cozumel, one of the best reefs in the world. Secondly, you can
snorkel from this boat.
Now, we've been on a lot of glass-bottom boats and I never got off
one in the middle of the water before. This is the perfect venue for
a family of any age. Those who swim can snorkel, or learn to.
Non-swimmers will get a glimpse of the beauty underwater without
getting wet. |

Trek
through the wilderness, then cool off by swimming in the Mayan
Springs. Cozumel is 29 miles long and 9 miles at its widest. Don't
let that scare you, though, as the relaxed, unhurried atmosphere of
this island influences everything. Even the iguanas skitter lazily
in front of you as you and your guide make your way through the
dense foliage to discover the wilderness of the island.
The iguana is more visible than other lizards because of its size
and large population. But wildlife encounters are common on this
hike--armadillos, deer, small foxes and coati call the Cozumel
jungle their home.
You will also be overwhelmed by the foliage and flowers while
listening to the ecological history of Cozumel as you travel off the
beaten track. You will be able to fantasize the past as you think
about the fact that Cozumel was once the bottom of the ocean. The
brain corals and conch shells that lie along the paths will surprise
you.
Enjoy your visit to two cenotes, a natural spring named by the
Mayans. Cenotes here and all over the Yucatan form an underground
river system and offer a refreshing respite in your walking tour. |

Are
you up to the challenge of pursuing the feisty and elusive
bonefish? The lagoons of Cozumel, with their shallow waters are
the perfect environment for Bonefish, Permit and other species of
sportfish.
This type of fishing takes place in an open Mexican "panga",
a small fishing boat. Bring a good pair of wading booties or shoes
to protect your feet from rocks. Polarized sunglasses are a must
to protect your eyes from the glare of the water and also to
assist in seeing the fish. Bring along SPF30 sunblock and wear a
hat with a long brim and protection for the back of your neck. A
long sleeve shirt and quick drying trousers are suggested for sun
protection.
The boat holds up to 2 people and you may purchase it for 4 hours,
6 hours or 8 hours, depending on your interest level and your time
in port. |

Cozumel's
best dive instructor will take you along on a real SCUBA dive.
It's a blast ! The Introduction to Scuba course is commonly
known as the resort course. This is a 4 hour course that allows
the student to experience diving in a controlled environment. You
will learn the do's and don't's from the classroom, followed by a
jump into shallow water from a platform to learn the very basic
water skills.
After the class, if you are comfortable doing so, you will join in
a boat trip to Paradise reef, maximum 40 ft. deep, to finish the
tank with the instructor. (If your ship's departure time from
Cozumel conflicts with this trip, we will substitute a shore dive
for the boat dive, thus ending the tour 30 minutes early.)
Classes are limited to 4 students per instructor.

This
course is on the Island of the Swallows and is wonderfully
sculptured in a natural setting. Designed by Nicklaus Design
Group, this environmental showcase of golf in Mexico has been
carefully sculpted from the Mayan Jungle. They have woven a
masterpiece through the jungle and around the native mangroves to
offer a challenging experience to the serious golfer and an
enjoyable round for the not so serious.
The four sets of tees allow golfers of all skill levels to enjoy
their round of golf as well as the peace and quiet of the natural
surroundings. Here is why I'm really impressed with this course,
other than the fact that the course is beautiful and very well
maintained: when the pro/manager was showing me the layout, he
suddenly stopped the golf cart for a large turtle which was
crossing the cart's path. He picked it up and ever so gently

This
tour is requested so often by groups that we have described and
priced it for you to see. You will be met at the pier at a
time specified for your group and escorted to the Cozumel-Playa
del Carmen Ferry Pier. The ride across the strait is about 35
minutes and comfortable.
An air-conditioned vehicle of the appropriate size will transport
you for the 45-minute ride to this famous ruin. Tulum is
breathtaking and once you arrive, you will have an hour guided
tour with your English-speaking guide.
Magnificently situated, teetering on a craggy cliff overlooking
the Caribbean, the walled ruins of Tulum have become the meeting
point between sun worshippers and archeological enthusiasts.
Thought to have been settled around 1200 A.D., Tulum was an
important trading port and its fortress was still occupied when
the Spaniards arrived in 1518. From the cliff-top site, you can
see the turquoise waters of the Caribbean. A path winds down to a
perfect beach, which allows you to dangle your toes. An
English-speaking guide will show you around the ruins of this
once-great Mayan city and then give you time to do some exploring
on your own. Your total time at Tulum is approximately 1 hour and
45 minutes. If time allows, you will be taken to a private beach
club to relax before being driven back to the ferry pier in Playa.
The return ferry leaves Playa at 5pm, getting you back to Cozumel
and your cruise ship pier by 6pm.

INFORMATION |
Cozumel
is a relatively small island just 29 miles long and 12 miles wide located
just off the coast of Mexico, south east of Cancun and due east of Playa
Del Carmen. There are many reasons why Cozumel is one of the best, most
popular and most affordable vacation and dive destinations in the World
... where over 97.6% of the divers can't wait to come
back! Yet again, Rodale's Annual Readers Poll for Jan/Feb 2003 (the
publisher of Scuba Diving Magazine), voted Cozumel ...
- #1 Top Visibility
(Caribbean/Atlantic)
- #1 Top Advanced
Diving (Caribbean/Atlantic)
- #2 Top Dive
Destinations (Caribbean/Atlantic)
- #3 Top Value
(Caribbean/Atlantic)
There are so many great
reasons to visit Cozumel that once you visit once, you might just get
hooked. Compared to other tropical vacation spots, Cozumel is very
inexpensive. The unusually short 2 hour flight from Houston, Miami or DFW
means you can be laying on a lounge chair sipping a beverage by noon! |
