Traveler Reviews - Taku Lodge

ALASKA W. Teel
This trip was the highlight of our Alaska trip. We thoroughly enjoyed it. My husband is a pilot and he had never flown in a seaplane so he enjoyed that part. The lodge and the salmon meal were extra ordinary. We almost got "over loaded" on the beautiful scenery! We truly enjoyed it and would recommend that shore trip to anyone--you definitely get your money's worth.
ALASKA S. Bender
Thank you for the follow-up. The trip to Alaska was fantastic. I would have to say that the highlight of the trip was the plane trip to Taku Lodge. The flight was so beautiful and the lodge was awesome, not to mention the food they served was the best meal of the entire trip. This trip was definitely worth the cost. Our guide was very friendly and knowledgeable and the folks at the lodge were great. It was a beautiful day. I want to go back! I will definitely use ShoreTrips again and will recommend you to others.

We had a GREAT time and were pleased with the price and the trip. We had no problems finding our guide. Our ShoreTrip worked out perfectly and you can look forward to more business from us.

TAKU GLACIER LODGE FLIGHT AND FEAST INFORMATION
This floatplane to the great wilderness is why you came to Alaska. This lodge, built in 1923, has a colorful history. To travel to its location, you are combining a stellar flight of 50 minutes over 5 glaciers and when you arrive at the lodge, you are immediately welcomed with open arms like you are returning home.
First there is the excitement of taking off on water. A floatplane is a unique experience and seems to always glide effortlessly from the water's surface right into the air. It will take but a few moments to see the port of Juneau disappear and have the craggy ice-covered mountains take over your vision.

Your air tour is narrated and you will soon understand that, although everything seems to blend together, there are many forms that glaciers take on in appearance. It is a mesmerizing vision and before long, you will feel the plane descending as it follows along the Taku River.

Immediately, a calm will overtake you as you climb down the short ladder and enter a different world. The hub of activity is centered around the main lodge, where the home fire is always burning. And you are made to feel right at home.

Wander at your will, or grab one of the staff to take you on an interpretive nature walk. Relax and breath in the fresh, oxygen-rich Alaska air. It's about this time that you begin to understand the magic that has lured so many to this beautiful country.

In a while, a fabulous meal will be laid out for you and you can indulge as much as you wish. Fresh King Salmon, a rarity to taste so fresh, is the main attraction. But even if salmon is not a favorite (and we beg you to try this just once to change your mind on that), there are plenty of sides to fill you up. Homemade everything, from coleslaw to baked beans, freshly baked compotes, scones and cookies and, at certain times, a taste of reindeer sausage!

Plenty to drink including wine and beer and perhaps you should have waited to take your walk after such a feast!

You will be on land about 2 hours and in the air for 30 minutes on your way out and a 15-minute return. Whatever the weather, be prepared as it changes just as fast you blink!

Departures (Local Island Time):  09:00 AM (3 hrs)  11:00 AM (3 hrs)  01:00 PM (3 hrs)  04:30 PM (3 hrs)

EVENING WHALE WATCHING IN JUNEAU INFORMATION

An exciting way to spend your evening in Juneau!  You will be met at the cruise pier and taken for a very pretty ride to Auk Bay to begin your whale watching experience. Once you board your boat, your experienced captain and naturalist will take you on a hunt for whales and wildlife. During the course of your trip, you will learn about life in Alaska as well as the habits of these mammals. In addition to humpbacks, you are also likely to see orca whales, stellar sea lions, harbor seals and eagles.
All in all, this energizing day will bring you closer to the real world up in the north.

JUNEAU HISTORIC GOLD-PANNING AND MINING TOUR INFORMATION
There's gold in them there hills - and you can pan for some. The Alaska-Juneau Mine proved to be the most successful of the three hard-rock gold mines that developed from this discovery. It operated for more than 50 years, located behind the now-existing city of Juneau. At its peak, the mill employed 1,000 men to process 12,000 tons of ore a day. It closed down in 1944, as wartime labor shortages made mining difficult and never re-opened.

This tour will fill in the blanks of the history of Juneau's gold discovery. You will be escorted by a guide who knows the facts about these tales of wealth and tragedy. You will be able to see the site of the Alaska-Juneau Mine.

We'll teach you how to pan for gold and you can keep all you find. And, if you come up empty, we'll give you a certificate for one square inch of the Orelove Bros. Claim!

JUNEAU MENDENHALL GLACIER FLOAT TRIP INFORMATION
This thrilling ride is a neat way to see the Mendenhall Glacier from the bottom. The Mendenhall float trip, which begins on Mendenhall Lake just below the renowned glacier, is an exciting, yet mild, white-water adventure that can be enjoyed by visitors of all ages. From the lake, just prior to the down-river journey, rafters will enjoy incredible views of the 12-mile-long Mendenhall Glacier, which rises 150 feet above the water. Visible to the rafter are the medials and moraines and nearby towering peaks. You might even have the opportunity to photograph icebergs floating in the lake.

You actually begin your rafting experience at the tidal waters near the Juneau International Airport. You will spend the majority of your trip relaxing and gaping at the spectacular mountains that loom over you at nearly 7,000 feet above the river. Only for a stretch of about a mile will you encounter whitewater as you travel. As you approach, the excitement of a true Alaskan experience comes to life - just remember that many have been here before and no one has ever been left behind!
You might get a little wet, but rain gear, life jacket (you won't need it!), and boots are supplied.

Great whale watching trip, guide was excellent.

We returned Sunday from our wonderful Alaska trip; The highlights were definitely the trips you suggested. All three ShoreTrips were great. There were two things that made each exursion special. The first was that we did not have to see nature with 500+ of our closest shipmates and the second was the outstanding guides who lead the excursions. I have given your name to a few
people who are planning the same trip either this year or next summer. Thanks again for great recommendations. I plan on recommending your service as much as possible.

JUNEAU'S BEST BY BUS INFORMATION
This more inclusive tour changes with the season.  This personal tour begins instantly as you travel through the city of Juneau. The Historic District has retained much of its original architecture and is small but lovely. There are several government buildings, the State Office Building, the Juneau-Douglas Museum, the Governor's House and the Capitol, as well as the St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church which you may choose to return and view on your own after this tour.

Several other highlights will be pointed out to you as you make your way through town and then along the coastline. You will pass by the Alaskan Brewing Company, once one of the largest microbreweries in the United States. Then on to Mendenhall Glacier's viewing platform. This translucent wonder is amazing. If you choose to spend a little time exploring the Visitor's Center, you may for an extra admission fee.

On your return, you will take a different route altogether, seeing Auke Bay where all the fishing boats come and go. You will pass Auke Lake, the University of Alaska Juneau campus, and you will stop at the charming Chapel on the Lake, if there are no pre-planned activities there.

Before you return to the cruise pier, you will take the road bridge to Douglas Island, a mountainous, forest-clad community that overlooks the Gastineau Channel. Here you will make one last stop to snap a photo of your cruiseship across the bay.

We change the itinerary towards mid-July and replace Douglas Island and the Chapel on the Lake with an incredible tour of the fish hatchery and the spawning stream when they are in full swing. The legend of the salmon running is really a true story and it is an event that everyone should see if they are in Juneau at the right time
Departures (Local Island Time):  09:15 AM (3 hrs)  03:15 PM (3 hrs)
    Pricing:  Per Person: $32.00 USD

MENDENHALL GLACIER AND JUNEAU TOUR BY BUS INFORMATION

The stories and personal experiences of the native guides set this tour apart from the others! Juneau is an interesting place, more sophisticated and vibrant than you would expect. It is also unlike any other state capital in this country, as it is accessible only by sea or air. It has no flat land to speak of and it has a giant icefield blocking off any chance of land access. It has been said that there are no stolen cars in Juneau, just joy rides, as there is nowhere to go!

Your tour begins in historical downtown Juneau, and will show off it's narrow angled streets and interesting architecture, an area that you might choose to return to later on. Among the buildings that you will pass are the Alaska State Museum, the State Office Building, the State Capitol, and the octagonal St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church.

After your overview of downtown and the government buildings, including the lovely Governor's mansion, you will head past the Gastineau Salmon Hatchery and the harbors of the city and outskirts.

Your visit to the remarkable Mendenhall Glacier will be a 1 hour stop. At certain times of the year, you will be able to see the bears catching fish in the stream from an overlook point located off one side of the entrance to the glacier. The glacier itself is one of the most accessible to the public. You will drive within a mile of the face. This year we have added the fee to enter the Visitor's Center. We found it so popular that the line to purchase tickets held up the tour. Yours will be prepurchased - no waiting and no extra fee. Here you will see a detailed explanation of the movement of the glacier, along with a great relief map and a ten-minute video.

Your return trip to Juneau's downtown takes a different route, through Auke Lake and the University of Alaska Juneau campus. This tour should give you a great overview with a lot of personality. When completed, it will help you decide what to do next.

Departures (Local Island Time):  09:15 AM (3 hrs)  09:45 AM (3 hrs)  03:15 PM (3 hrs)
Pricing:  Per Person: $39.00 USD (Includes admission to Visitor's Center at glacier)

JUNEAU The Gorhams
We all enjoyed the trip by the tour guide in Juneau. He took us around parts of Juneau and to Mendenhall glacier and up to an old church. He was really good we really enjoyed what he had to say. We would definetely book again in the future.

THE ORIGINAL JUNEAU SALMON BAKE, BUT THAT'S NOT ALL INFORMATION
Whether you like salmon or not, you will have lots of fun at this traditional event. You really have to try this at at least one of your port stops. The salmon, which you have seen spawning on every river from mid-June through September, are fresh, thick and delicious. But, for those of you who prefer other choices, you will find BBQ chicken and ribs as well. Everything is accompanied by a host of salads, including caesar, cole slaw, rice pilaf and BBQ beans with reindeer sausage, and, as this is all-you-can-eat, you may try everything more than once.

You will be outdoors but in a protected area, which will allow you to roast some marshmallows over an open fire when you are ready. Music will accompany your meal whether you dine at lunch or dinner. And you will be able to explore a little before or after your meal, as the salmon waterfalls and the Wagner mine are right nearby.

This is a great value, as the ride up is narrated and you will be going through Juneau proper.

TRACY ARM FJORD GLACIER CRUISE INFORMATION
See Harbor Seals & Humback Whales This narrow fjord twists and turns for miles and then ends with a spectacular sight. Board this comfortable boat, a vessel which lends itself to this type of expedition so well. The Tracy Arm Fjord contains scenery that rivals that of the famous Glacier Bay. Within Tracy Arm, steep-walled granite canyons plummet 2,000 feet into incredibly deep and narrow fjords; we're talking rocks to the waterline here. The fjords wind past waterfalls and glaciers to massive ice fields. It is very likely harbor seals may be spotted on the hundreds of icebergs. Humpback whales are a common sight, as are killer whales. Frequently mountain goats can been seen climbing the slopes. Often you will see bald eagles soaring overhead.

At the end of the fjord is an unbelievable view of South Sawyer Glacier. The captain will bring the catamaran as close to the glacier as the ice floe allows.

During your ride, an on-board naturalist will fill you in on the history of the typography of the land and the formation of glaciers. The naturalist will also be able to give you history into the Tlingit people and their culture

This was a great excursion. We were both scared of flying, but our pilot was awesome and we are so glad we did it. Unless you get into the air somehow, you really miss a lot from a cruise ship. It was an awesome experience to land on the glacier!
JUNEAU M. McConnell
We had a great time on the helicopter ride. It seemed all too short. We did find that we saved quit a bit of cash vs. the ship. Thanks for the help and I would recommend your company to any other visitors to Alaska.
ALASKA K. Unruh
Everything was really great. Would recommend it to anyone. Our guides were super and the weather was especially good. Thank you
ALASKA D. Richardson
We just want to thank you for your referrals, via phone, to our shore
trips in Alaska. We just returned from our cruise and were so pleased with the professionalism and the knowledgable guides of each trip. The ease of
booking online and the quick response was appreciated. We talked to others on the cruise who had booked through the cruise lines and they were not satisfied with the "dirty helicopters" and the expensive price tags of some of the excursions. You helped to make our trip fabulous!

It was 1880 when two prospectors named Joe Juneau and Richard Harris arrived at Gold Creek. Along the banks of the river, they came upon a Tlingit fishing camp of the Auke tribe where the chief showed them gold flakes in the creek. This resulted in the discovery of one of the largest gold deposits ever found. It took only a month after they claimed their stake that the first boatloads of prospectors arrived. Overnight a town sprouted here along the shores of Gastineau Channel.

It is still fascinating to imagine what went on around here.
